All occasion files in the System Folder have been added to the active list which you can view or change by selecting Occasion Files… in the File menu. Make sure you have at least one file specifically for your personal occasions.
Take a quick look at Preferences… to set basic things such as the Standard Text Style and Window Background Color available in the Window Colors & Text Styles preference set. If you aren't sure what a preference does, don't worry about it. Use the default value until you become more familiar with the package.
You should also use the What's Happening menu to select the default range of dates displayed when you open the application. Set the event list window's position and size to something you like, then select Save This Set in the Open Window Set sub-menu to make it permanent.
